ecd3fc4348 internal/lsp: read files eagerly
We use file identities pervasively throughout gopls. Prior to this
change, the identity is the modification date of an unopened file, or
the hash of an opened file. That means that opening a file changes its
identity, which causes unnecessary churn in the cache.

Unfortunately, there isn't an easy way to fix this. Changing the
cache key to something else, such as the modification time, means that
we won't unify cache entries if a change is made and then undone. The
approach here is to read files eagerly in GetFile, so that we know their
hashes immediately. That resolves the churn, but means that we do a ton
of file IO at startup.

Incidental changes:

Remove the FileSystem interface; there was only one implementation and
it added a fair amount of cruft. We have many other places that assume
os.Stat and such work.

Add direct accessors to FileHandle for URI, Kind, and Version. Most uses
of (FileHandle).Identity were for stuff that we derive solely from the
URI, and this helped me disentangle them. It is a *ton* of churn,
though. I can revert it if you want.

5916a50871 internal/lsp: check for file URIs on LSP requests
In general, we expect all URIs to be file:// scheme. Silently ignore
requests that come in for other schemes. (In the command-line client we

The calling convention for beginFileRequest is odd; see the function

f7b8cc7bd0 internal/span,lsp: disambiguate URIs, DocumentURIs, and paths
Create a real type for protocol.DocumentURIs. Remove span.NewURI in
favor of path/URI-specific constructors. Remove span.Parse's ability to

As a consequence, we no longer mangle non-file URIs to start with
file://, and crash all over the place when one is opened.

ad473c03aa internal/lsp: add handling for go.mod files in internal/lsp functions
When we are processing a go.mod file, we are calling go/packages.load
when we should not be. It will always return 0 packages since it is
not a .go file. This CL adds branching inside each internal/lsp protocol
function and also adds a check in snapshot.PackageHandles for the file type
and returns an error. This will prevent `go list` from running on go.mod files for now.

It also prepares for command lines that need to use diff features based on the

correctly or the diff results make no sense. This adds the SplitLines function
to the diff pacakge to do it right and then uses it everwhere we we already
doing it wrong.

It also makes all the diff tests external black box tests.

2f43c6d1a2 internal/span: change to private fields
Change span to hide its fields and have validating accessors
This catches the cases where either the offset or the position is being used
when it was not set.
It also normalizes the forms as the API now controls them, and allows us to

The converters are now allowed to return an error, which lets us cleanly
propagate bad cases.
The lsp was then converted to the new format, and also had some error checking
of its own added on the top.
All this allowed me to find and fix a few issues, most notably a case where the
wrong column mapper was being used during the conversion of definition results.

the outer layer.
This will keep us honest about capabilities, let us add the
caching and conversion layers easily, and also allow for a future
where we expose the source directory as a supported API for other
tools.
The outer lsp package then becomes the adapter from the core
features to the specifics of the LSP protocol.

9b5bafe36f internal/lsp: extract view to its own package
This allows us to write the lsp verbs in terms of a stable underlying source
management layer.
This should make it easier to refactor the underlying layer to add more powerful
caching and incremental modes as we go.

9650c66da3 internal/lsp: add support for publishing diagnostics
Any time a file is changed, we compute diagnostics for its package and
return them to the client. No caching is implemented yet, so we parse
and type-check the package each time.
